Modern Maternity Session in the Heart of Downtown LA
There’s something about standing in front of Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall—those shiny steel waves gleaming in the Los Angeles sun—that makes you feel two things simultaneously: elegant and completely ridiculous. It’s the kind of place where you go to feel sophisticated, and then immediately realize you’ve stepped in gum. So naturally, it’s where I found myself crouching behind a ficus, camera in hand, while a stunningly pregnant woman struck goddess-like poses against stainless steel panels that reflected downtown traffic like a funhouse mirror. This is the glamorous underbelly of being a maternity photographer in Los Angeles.
As a Los Angeles maternity photographer, I’ve shot on beaches, in nurseries, and once inside a vintage Airstream that smelled faintly of lavender and mothballs (it’s a long story). But something about photographing an expectant parent at the Disney Concert Hall hits differently. Maybe it's the juxtaposition: this architectural colossus of twisted metal framing something as tender and organic as a third-trimester belly. Or maybe it’s just the acoustics. (Even the pigeons sound classically trained here.) Regardless, it makes for some seriously dreamy images.
